Categories and Folders

Minx - the mee.nu blogging engine - uses a general concept of folders to organise all your content.  Categories are one type of folder; you will start out with one sample category.  If you copy the settings from that folder to a new folder, with just the name and path changed, you will create a new category for your posts.  We'll be adding a specific category screen shortly to make this easier.

If you have questions regarding categories and other folders, post here.

1 Attempting to follow the 'quickstart' directions to copy the mee.nu css file...it is failing to upload, although directly pasting the url into the browser shows I've got the right place.  [No error message, the upload page refreshes and clears the field.  Nothing appears in the css folder though]

2 Sorry, I missed this question earlier!  I'll take a look and get back to you.

3 I'm trying to add some categories, enable category tags to be seen in the individual post, and possibly have category icons.

None of my experiments in these areas has resulted in anything except this message...

You are not a manager for this site. Shoo.

I haven't been able to add a category for a couple of days.

4 Oops!  Let me fix that for you...

Okay, you have access to your own folders again.  Sorry about that! ops:

That was part of the multiple authors update; I forgot to list the site owner in one of the access checks.

5 I too have an oops....How can I reset my template settings to default...(I have....errred)

Posted by: Brickmuppet at July 04, 2007 02:13 AM (V5zw/)

6 Can you still access the edit screens?  I can post any of the standard templates, if the one you want isn't already in the resources page.

I'd like to add an item in my right column called Cast of Characters that introduces readers to the people I write about.

I'm not sure if this would involve folders, templates, or some combination thereof.

I took a stab at it -- copying the Blogroll template and just renaming it Cast of Characters -- but nothing appeared on my blog.

Any direction? The item would ideally contain links which direct the reader to an entry or file with photos and text.

8 You need to edit your Sidebar template to tell it where to include the new template.

Just add an [include "Cast of Characters"] somewhere that looks appropriate.

9 Got it! Thank you.

10 I created a new heading on my sidebar for non blogroll links but I can't get it to display the links I have added for it in a new template folder.  What am I doing wrong?

11 Um.  I can see your Otaku Links - is this something else?

Posted by: Pixy Misa at July 11, 2007 10:01 AM (PiXy!)

12 I figured it out, I just moved the links into the sidebar template. It was one of those real doh! moments.

13 Cool.

14 If I change a post from one category to another it shows up under both categories.  How do I remove it from the old category list?  I tried setting the category back to the old category and the action to delete and hitting submit, but that didn't seem to do it.

15 In the post listing, select the post and use the "Move to" or "Remove from" options as appropriate.  There seem to be a couple of bugs related to this, however, so you might want to hang on for a day or so while I fix them.

16 Thank you sir!

17 I may have discovered another categories issue.
I added category labels to each post. This looks fine in Firefox but after the recent leekspin post I looked at the page in AOL and IE....there are little squares with red "x"s in them.

Possibly related....in several of my posts with pictures, particularly the Mikasa post there are several of the little buggers.

With this latter weirdness, I at least have an idea what's up. I had trouble uploading the pics (OK, I goofed) but as I can't look at the raw HTML I can't actually completely remove the link/ image code...It is still there making little boxes containing littler red "x"s visible in IE.

While I personally am all for the "just use Firefox" solution, many of my readers are likely to be unresponsive to it.

Categories question Question: Is there any plan to allow multiple categories per post and/ or a hyperlink to said category in post (ala Blogger). This feature is the only thing Blogger has that I like better than the mee.nu norm.

Conquer this and your victory will be complete !

18 You can have multiple categories per post, but they're a bit fiddly right now.  I plan to address that tomorrow.

I'll take a look and see if I can find what the story is with your little red x's.

19 Curious behavior with (wrong) permlinks on single-category pages:

Go to oldgrouch.mee.nu, and scroll down to "You'll wonder where the money went..." Its permlink is "http://oldgrouch.mee.nu/youll_wonder_where_the_money_went...".

Now click the "Linkage" category in the sidebar, and then scroll down to the same post. Permlink is NOW "http://oldgrouch.mee.nu/linkage/youll_wonder_where_the_money_went...", which, if used, seems to want to generate the whole category page.
Interesting, huh?

20 Hmm.  Actually, that permalink should work, even with the category in it.  I'll poke around a bit and see what I can find.

21 I cannot seem to add any more catagories, other than the one I added...
Any Ideas?
