Example : Type in "Read an interesting article at Breitbart today and thought you might like a look" and expect it to display as "Read an interesting article at Breitbart today and thought you might like a look"(making the word Breitbart a hyperlink). Instead it displays all the html (or BBCODE). What am I doing wrong?
Posted by: Metzger at June 28, 2007 04:35 PM (2eGp3)
There are three ways to insert a link:
Use BBCode - that should work fine.
Use the little link icon in the toolbar: Select the text you want to make into a link, click on the "Hyperlink" icon (looks like a little chain), and type or paste the URL into the pop-up box.
Or (and I generally don't recommend this), use the HTML editor. Click on the <> icon and you'll get a pop-up window where you can directly edit the HTML. It works fine, but most people won't want to do that.

That's a defense measure against spammers and hostiles who try to screw up a page by embedding HTML in comments. What he's done is to make it so that the left-angle-bracket character gets escaped (turned into "<") so that it doesn't trigger the browser's formatting engine.
That way the only HTML that users like you are permitted to use are the ones supported by the editor or by BBCODE, which is a carefully circumscribed list that doesn't open up vulnerabilities.

Pixy, somehow there was a partial post of a comment I was composing in this thread. (Unfortunately, the prose is loaded with spoilers about Shingu, and I'm sorry about that.)
I don't have any idea how it happened, especially since they both have the same timestamp. (At least to the minute.)

There's a retry-on-error system built into Minx now, but it shouldn't be happening on an HTTP POST.
Oh. Hmm. All the text data for mee.nu (including posts and comments) is stored in MyISAM tables - which have no transaction support. If there was an error during an insert, the Minx Query module would automatically re-connect to the database and retry the insert, but it's not smart enough to check if the original insert was partially successful.
Roll on MySQL 6.0 and the Falcon storage engine!

Small bug report: When I enter a new post, at the bottom I'm told that there are 1281 comments, which I presume is the total number of comments on my blog so far. Once I finish and post it, then if I look again it says 0, which is right.
That 1281 seems wrong, somehow. It's not really serious, but it could confuse people.

You want the Style Images option. Choose your starter image, change the font size to something a little smaller, and click on save.
You might need to do a forced reload (hold down shift and click the refresh/reload button) to get the new banner to display right away.

My sidebar has disappeared; I no longer have my comments, my blogroll, or my archives. Could you let me know what can be done? I would send you an e-mail, but I have no idea what server AOL uses.

I think the "awaiting comments" mechanism you've set up isn't well considered. There are a number of problems with it.
First, it isn't even obvious that it's happened. The only reason I knew about that one today was because someone else noticed the number mismatch.
Second, there isn't any way for me to look at such a comment to decide whether to let it through. I have to enable it in order to see it.
I don't really see any benefit in having a three-tier system. Either delete the comment entirely as spam or let it through. But if you choose to continue with a three-tier system, there needs to be a way to directly alert the blog owner that a comment has been held, and to let them view it and decide whether to let it through.
Posted by: Steven Den Beste at July 16, 2007 09:41 PM (+rSRq)
That should have been "awaiting moderation", not "awaiting comments".
Posted by: Steven Den Beste at July 16, 2007 09:41 PM (+rSRq)
First two points I agree with absolutely. I'll address those ASAP.
Third point I'll think about.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at July 17, 2007 04:16 AM (PiXy!)
Is the "comments" folder directory (http://oldgrouch.mee.nu/edit/comment/) supposed to show all comments, or only the recent ones? Mine presently shows two comments written on July, but there are others from April and May that are still visible on the site.

Bug alert: Right now at "Ego's Nest" the top comment on the side bar has a toasted "Entry" URL. It's a comment by Wonderduck that begins "Good lord, am I a dope." The "Entry" URL is this:
http://avatar.mee.nu/641057
I have no idea where that might have come from, but it isn't a link to anything.

My brand new Category listing files don't show comments for any of my posts. Even if I click to access the page for the post, there are no comments.
I understand why they're not inline; the category listing files are already ridiculously long. But why can't I see the comments by clicking through to the individual entries?
Posted by: Steven Den Beste at August 23, 2007 07:41 PM (+rSRq)
OK, I figured out something. The main page links to article pages at the root, but the category page adds an entry in the URL. So:
http://chizumatic.mee.nu/help_the_economy_spend_spend_spend
becomes
http://chizumatic.mee.nu/daily_life/help_the_economy_spend_spend_spend
The first one has comments. The second one does not.
I'm going to try changing the category definition to get rid of that extra path entry. It's set up automatically, but maybe I don't want it that way.

Who the heck is wonderduck and why is it every time I come here Minx thinks that I am it and that I'm logged in?and
Remember when I came over here and was logged in as wonderduck? Well, I did what you suggested and logged out. Worked like a charm!
BUT now every time I come over to comment I have to again log out of that name... just something else for Pixy to work on.

My custom is to surf with Java and cookies off. This has saved me much trouble, and I have gotten in trouble when I forgot. I post here with both on.
Normally I right click/open in new tab the date stamp, and this works for me. While surfing Steven den Beste's site, I opened his never watch category, and then tried to open the gundum post at the top. It instead displayed the category view all over again.
While trying to replicate, I was able to access the first post in Old Grouch's Administrivia category, and the first in my lessons learned category.

Clicking "add comment" to get a page that says "comments disabled" is exceedingly annoying.

Hi Pixie!
I have a regular commenter on my site from Germany who is complaining that his comments aren't getting through, but are being flagged as "awaiting moderation". He's getting on me about it, so I thought I would ask you what is happening. I am set up for unlimited comments. I assume this is some sort of spam filter?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I'd like to add an item in my right column called Cast of Characters that introduces readers to the people I write about.
I'm not sure if this would involve folders, templates, or some combination thereof.
I took a stab at it -- copying the Blogroll template and just renaming it Cast of Characters -- but nothing appeared on my blog.
Any direction? The item would ideally contain links which direct the reader to an entry or file with photos and text.

I added category labels to each post. This looks fine in Firefox but after the recent leekspin post I looked at the page in AOL and IE....there are little squares with red "x"s in them.
Possibly related....in several of my posts with pictures, particularly the Mikasa post there are several of the little buggers.
With this latter weirdness, I at least have an idea what's up. I had trouble uploading the pics (OK, I goofed) but as I can't look at the raw HTML I can't actually completely remove the link/ image code...It is still there making little boxes containing littler red "x"s visible in IE.
While I personally am all for the "just use Firefox" solution, many of my readers are likely to be unresponsive to it.
Categories question Question: Is there any plan to allow multiple categories per post and/ or a hyperlink to said category in post (ala Blogger). This feature is the only thing Blogger has that I like better than the mee.nu norm.
Conquer this and your victory will be complete !
Posted by: Ken Talton at September 17, 2007 11:46 PM (V5zw/)
I'll take a look and see if I can find what the story is with your little red x's.

Go to oldgrouch.mee.nu, and scroll down to "You'll wonder where the money went..." Its permlink is "http://oldgrouch.mee.nu/youll_wonder_where_the_money_went...".
Now click the "Linkage" category in the sidebar, and then scroll down to the same post. Permlink is NOW "http://oldgrouch.mee.nu/linkage/youll_wonder_where_the_money_went...", which, if used, seems to want to generate the whole category page.

SQL can get quite complicated in situations like that, particularly with MySQL which has some annoying limitations on subqueries. But I've modified it to only return the first of your sites, and so not duplicate messages unnecessarily.
Now I'm just setting it up to have a flag for when you have new messages, which is necessary for it to be really useful.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at September 30, 2007 11:04 AM (PiXy!)
However, when I open up the body of the message, it says that they are from you.
When I hover the mouse over the phrase 'Pixy Misa' in the from field, it says that there is a link to patbuckman.mee.nu.

Probably the only reason I noticed early is because I was expecting a bug report function as part of the site management screen.
Then I remembered something I'd thought I read about mee.nu sites including a free email, and confused the two with the PM function.

Hey, Pixy. Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but here it goes...
I think the page control is bugging with Google's indexing robot. I was checking with google and saw a buttload of warnings about pages that don't exist, like http://youredoingitwrong.mee.nu/?page=34. There's nothing on that page... except a link to page 35. You might wanna check your logs to see if the google bot isn't raping bandwith, requesting page after page of nothing.
Also, robots.txt. I implemented it using a template. I'm not sure if its working, exactly, as if you go to youredoingitwrong.mee.nu/robots.txt it shows as "robots.txt/", and nothing appears in Google's robots tools. I don't think I can set the directory the file is located in (files/robots.txt) and I don't think I can place any files there directly. I also contemplated creating a new directory in the root, but I wasn't sure if I'd completely screw everything up doing that. So I ask you... whah?
Posted by: McGurk at June 27, 2007 06:38 PM (Ri74D)
Posted by: Pixy Misa at June 27, 2007 06:55 PM (PiXy!)
Another question... Sitemaps. I'm trying to work up one right now. It'd be nice if there was an auto updating version. One that listed each directory (update frequency: daily) and one that listed each post (update frequency: weekly). First one would be updated regularly as its important that posts be indexed frequently. The second one would be updated less frequently as user added comments are important to index, but less so. Automatic sitemap generators fail on the blog in general, and that page control that never ends. I tried to create a page that listed every post (youredoingitwrong.mee.nu/all) but it fails with too many templates requested. I think it has something to do with [posts unpaged show=all]. Anything other than [posts:here] also causes the error. I also think that error may hurt any automatic sitemap generator I may create, as each element would be an individual template.
Just thought you weren't busy enough so I'd give ya something to do...
Posted by: McGurk at June 27, 2007 08:05 PM (Ri74D)
I'm surprised you hit the template limit with only 100-odd posts; I'll have to take a look at that.

The magic word this time is "quote". Text was (with braces substituted for brackets):
"{quote from the original report by...}".
BBCode interpreted this as invocation of blockquote formatting, then ate the rest of the string to the closing bracket.
Posted by: Old Grouch at October 03, 2007 05:23 PM (k8zOE)
You can turn off BBCode for just that post if you're not using it.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at October 04, 2007 05:52 AM (PiXy!)
In this case, I fixed it by changing the text to: "Extract from..."
How about testing for "quote]" as opposed to "quote "? (But what do I know?)
Thanks!

Not worth spending a lot of time on then, IMO, but perhaps worth including in the FAQs or the BBCode docs ("Why did it do that?" "Strings beginning with '[' get interpreted as BBCode unless the word following the '[' is NOT a valid command.")

I just had some strangeness happen with a spoiler tag. First I clicked to expand the spoiler text in a comment. Then as I started typing in my reply comment, the entry box jumped up then down a couple of lines each time I pressed the spacebar. Then, when I clicked in the entry box to place the cursor somewhere else, it caused the comment entry box to drop down and cover up the Preview and Submit buttons, effectively locking me out of posting the comment (tabbing to the buttons didn't seem to work, they were simply gone). Is this something that's a browser issue (IE7) more than anything Minx is doing?

To set up multiple authors, first get your brother to sign up at mee.nu. Then go to Friends, and create an Authors group. Add your brother to the Authors group, and he'll be able to post.

Minor rendering problem -- in the comments to http://evilpundit.mee.nu/galactic_death_ray some links don't show properly with Internet Explorer, though they are fine in Firefox.

Something you might want to look at.
I was trolling through Wonderducks archives for an old post. I remembered roughly that it was in June. I came across this post first and it mentioned the post I was looking for in a link (the "a few posts back" one). However, in the switch to Minx, it killed that old numerically indexed link when the post was renamed. For when other mu.nu people start migrateing to Minx, is there a way to keep those old links alive? Having two copies of every old post is wasteful (and would make comments a nightmare), as is wrangling up some code to scrub every old self-referencing link in someone's blog. Seems like a lose-lose-lose situation.

I'm having issues with posts containing blockquotes. For some reason, once the quote starts the text goes black (I currently have it set to dark blue in the style) and stays that way for the rest of the post. I tried editing the post and changing the color there, but that just introduced a new wrinkle as the style tags didn't read correctly. Where every "style color[...]" tag was in the source, in the finished text I got ';">' showing up. I had to edit out all the "color" code before the junk characters would go away. Which leaves me with the original problem.
Any help?

Oh, now it's working. Keen.
Anyway, I was wondering if there's anything set up to transfer an existing blog to mee.nu. (I'm at Blogspot, but I regret it.)
Thanks!

I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles with this function, but it's pretty close, so you can expect to see it in about a week's time.

Thanks! I didn't see it anywhere, but it's possible I missed it.

(I presently have mee.nu, unme.mee.nu, and oldgrouch.mee.nu listed, but I note that while the comments editor for mee.nu remembers my name and email, it doesn't rememember my blog (web .)

OK, probably a dumb question, but I can't seem to change the name of my site. I've got a site here called Forty-Two. But the heading on the top is different--I originally called it something different, and can't change it back. What happened? Am I missing something really basic?

When I copy the link to an entry, then paste it in a browser window, the screen always jumps down to the comments on that entry's page.
Is there a way to get the entry to display at the top of the page?
