Time For A Change - Tuesday 11th September 4AM GMT

I'll be updating the software today - to version 1.1.  Officially this is a beta, though only the 1.1 functions are in beta; existing features shouldn't be affected.

After I've checked that all is well with the new style/layout and image wizards, I'll be enabling those for everyone.

Applets

Shared applets are also in this update, with an initial set of applets ready for your sidebars: recent comments, recent posts, topic list, category list, archive list, search function and site statistics.

Applets work very much like included templates, with two exceptions: They don't change your template context (tags and variables), and you can share them with other users.  If I set up a nice applet on mysite.mee.nu, you can use it with the code [applet mysite.mee.nu:niceapplet].  With your own applets and the standard applet set, you don't need to specify the site.

Update: 1.1b is now live.  I'll be testing it tonight, and then I'll activate the features for everyone tomorrow morning.

1 Hi Pixy!

Where will/do the applet docs live?
Also (was waiting for next update for this), "Statistics" link still doesn't work on my site.

Thanks
O.G.

Yeah, the sitemeter is dead for me too. It's not something I worried about, but I figured I'd back up O.G. on that.

And I've been looking forward to the style wizards, because I'm too lazy to come up with my own cool design.

I was just thinking about what the options are, for starting a new weblog.  For my main blog, the five-year 'Blogiversary' is today; it is still on .blogspot.com, with Blogger.

Some time after I started that blog, five years ago, a lot of people seemed to be moving on Movable Type.  (Some were using GreyMatter, or pMachine, though.)  I was considering moving my blog onto Movable Type (or TypePad, which was begun, by the same company), but could find no solid reason to do so.

More recently, it seemed that more people have begun using WordPress.  I am likely going to start a new weblog soon, and I've been wondering what platform to use

Do the blogs at "mee.nu" use a separate blogging platform, for the weblogs here?  Or do they use one of those, which I've mentioned above?

Also, I am confused about the "mee.nu" domain.  I know that there are a lot of blogs that have been at "mu.nu" - something I have never looked into, or understood.  Is this a successor to the "MuNu family of blogs," or is it something totally new?  What are the advantages of starting a blog at this domain, rather than using a ".com"?  Is the difference that with "mu.nu" or "mee.nu", you don't have to purchase your own domain name, and get web space?  Are there any other differences?

With all of these changes, and new services, that have arisen, since I started my blog five years ago, it has become hard to keep up with it all, and know what is best, for my blogging needs.  As stated above, I am likely going to start a new blog soon, so any information you could provide would be very much appreciated.  Thank you!

4 Old Grouch and Boviate - 1.1 should go live today.

Just doing a final bit of cleanup work before releasing it.

5 Aakash - Hi, and thanks for asking.

mee.nu is a sister-site to mu.nu.  mu.nu has been my hobby for the past few years, and mee.nu is a new commercial offering based on the software I've been developing for mu.nu.

mee.nu uses a totally new blogging system called Minx.  It's designed to do a lot more things than just blogs - we'll soon be rolling out features to let you run your own forums, wikis, photo albums, podcasts and so on, all without installing any software.

And yes, with mee.nu, you don't need to buy your own domain.  You still can, though - if you start out with a mee.nu site and then later decide you want a .com address, you can do that too.

We have an import function which should make it easy to transfer your existing Blogger site.  Well, importing the file is easy; exporting it from Blogger is still a bit fiddly.
