Editor Questions

Having a problem with the editor, or don't know how to perform a particular function?  Ask here.

Note: Our current WYSIWYG editor doesn't work properly in Opera, and doesn't work at all in Safari.  We're looking at alternatives, and we're open to suggestions.  We will also be adding support for alternate editors, so if you have a favourite, here's the place to add your vote.

*attempt 2*

I haven't had a chance to try again (at work, gonna get fired ;-) ), but when I tried to use the WYSIWYG editor in the "More:" section to try one if the ol' "image below the jump" tricks, it just sat there like a lump. When that didn't work, I used the image insertion tool in the "Text:" section. It worked, but it pasted the image in the "More:" section. I don't think it was anything retarded on my part, but you never know.

2 Okay, I've found the comment problem and fixed it, which will be a relief for everyone.

It was, in fact, saving your comments.  It was even saving them somewhere vaguely sensible.  Just not anywhere you can actually see them again.

The trick was, it only happened when you were posting a comment inside a category page or a subforum or something like that.  The reason why this happened is a little complicated, but once I realised what was going on it was very easy to fix.

Now!

As for your editor problem - I'll take a look at that.  I have seen the More editor behave a little oddly like that, but not for a while.  I've certainly posted images to it.

I have an updated version of the editor with some bug fixes; possibly that will help.

Is there some simple way to us the insert image tool to display images that are uploaded/saved into our images folder without having to remember the path/filname or first copy the shortcut to the clipboard? I know you've been mentioning drag-and-drop capability over the last couple weeks. Is that a function of the editor?

4 How do you we go about adding websites to the blogroll?  I cant seem to access that feature.

Yes!  If you open the file manager in a new window (I'm working on making a nice compact version of it to use just that way) you can drag and drop images right into the editor.  It actually copies the sizing and attributes like borders as well, so view the full size image when you do this.

There's no special blogroll editor yet; you just put the links into the Blogroll template.  Once I have a proper blogroll system, you'll be able to import those links, so nothing will be wasted.

7 Does the editor change non-breaking spaces into just plain spaces or did I screw up on saving twice?
My most recent post includes a part number that contains imbedded spaces but shouldn't be split over two lines. I opened the <> html screen and inserted the &-n-b-s-p-; (fuzzed so it doesn't get eaten) strings in the right spots, clicked "apply" then "ok", then "save" on the main screen. But the number still gets broken and the nonbreaks are regular spaces when I look at the page source.
Tried it again and the same thing happened. Don't BELIEVE I made the same error twice, but you never know...

8 Back after H*ll Week, and wow, you've redecorated! :-)
Since post editor update, I can't get into the "more" section. Clicking the "More" link draws the editing window on the page, but I can't get the cursor there. (Clicking in the edit area does nothing.) I have java disabled (machine I'm on now doesn't even have a JVM), if that's relevant.

Hmm.  I didn't think it did, but I haven't tested it myself.

A number of people are having this problem, so I'll change the default setting to make it easier.

10 Okay tried the editor again and yes it does turn non-breaking spaces into regular spaces. It also eats them if there's no adjacent printable character.

This one is probably a "working as designed" item, but it's interesting: If the post title is a "String within Quotations" (like this) it will accept the title for publication *but* if you try to subsequently edit the post, the title will disappear and have to be re-entered.

11 Hmm.  That's not working as designed, it's a bug in a corner case.  I'll certainly fix it.

12 Is there a way to reduce the width of the sidebars (widen the text field?)

Posted by: Brickmuppet at May 19, 2007 03:55 AM (V5zw/)

13 On the edit page?  Yes, though it's slightly tricky.

The edit page uses your custom CSS if you have such, so if you change it to make your page wider, it will take effect there as well.

I've gotten almost everything working! Mee.Nuvia is great!

A few questions...

How do I get the "tagline" or description to show in the various categories?

How does one insert the "forum" feature into the template?

Is there anyway to have the forum sort topics by category?

What does "url pattern" do in the files/ folders? Part of my problem was staring at that field wondering what to put in it....it works fine empty. What hidden wonders does it conceal?

"private, system, hidden, cache" what are these bright shiney candy-like buttons that tempt me so?

(Sorry about being a total weeaboo. )

15 Sorry about the delay answering your questions, Brickmuppet!

Here goes:
How do I get the "tagline" or description to show in the various categories?
[category.tagline] and [category.desc] are what you want.
How does one insert the "forum" feature into the template?
That's a little tricky; I'll be upgrading the forum system this week and I'll post more info then.
Is there anyway to have the forum sort topics by category?
Not sort by category, but you can break it into sub-formums by category.
What does "url pattern" do in the files/ folders?
Um.  Right now - nothing!  Sorry about that.
"private, system, hidden, cache" what are these bright shiney candy-like buttons that tempt me so?
The important ones are private and cache.  Setting a folder as private means that only you can access it.  setting the cache flag allows the system to cache pages, which makes it faster for busy sites.  You only want to turn caching off in special cases, such as dynamically-generated CSS, where you need to change things depending on (say) what web browser is being used.

16 Hi, more post editor anomalies!

If you create a string of links that are individual words (looks like: link1 link2 link3) AND you open the source editor for some reason, it automagically removes the spaces between the links (looks like link1link2link3). Workaround: Add a printable character to the space between the links, then remove it just before posting.

The character-which-is-SHIFT+7 does wonky things when used in the title attribute of a link. (Example: "AT&T"). Escaping the character in the source editor doesn't work, the escape gets replaced with the plain character when you "apply".

17 In 2nd para above, should have read: "removes spaces between the links when you 'apply'".

Ick.  Okay, I'll log that, but I don't know when it will be fixed...

This one, however, I can fix right away... Done!

19 Hey, when I added html face, color, size, and marquee bgcolor tags it really messed up my page. I was more just experimenting with what it would let me do, but I can't put it back now. samw.mee.nu. I can't get back to edit page to erase it all.

Posted by: Sam W at June 27, 2007 06:01 PM (b7y0i)

20 That's... odd.  I can see the problem, but I can't see why it's happening.  Hang on while I dig around a bit.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at June 27, 2007 07:02 PM (PiXy!)

21 Oh, I see the problem.  Hang on...  Fixed.

Careful with those tags!

We'll be changing the edit screen so you can't break it like that, but I hadn't actually considered breaking it that way.

22 Is it possible to use an offline blog posting software like Qumana?  If so what is the end point.  Thought I had it but no luck.

Posted by: Squidgrunt at July 06, 2007 06:49 PM (5rzho)

23 Ah, sorry, no.  It's planned but had dropped of the radar.

It shouldn't be too hard to add, so I'll take another look at it this weekend.
