New 1.1 Update News!

Version 1.1 is live!

You should have two new options in your edit menu, under Manage: Styles and Images.  This is where you can play with styles (you can have more than one style, and switch between them), and styled images (banners and footers, plus things like lolcats, motivators, and captions).

It's now after after 11:50 PM here at Pixy Labs, so I'll leave posting all the details until the morning.

Oh, and registrations are back for those of you waiting patiently to join up.  New users automatically get the full 1.1 treatment.

1.1 Update News

Hi everyone.

We're currently in the process of activating the Minx 1.1 upgrade.  Registrations are temporarily disabled while we do this.  Registration should be back later today.

If you have an existing blog, you'll have a new button to update your blog to use the 1.1 theme system.  This backs up your existing templates before switching over, so you can always switch back if you have any problems.

Time For A Change - Tuesday 11th September 4AM GMT

I'll be updating the software today - to version 1.1.  Officially this is a beta, though only the 1.1 functions are in beta; existing features shouldn't be affected.

After I've checked that all is well with the new style/layout and image wizards, I'll be enabling those for everyone. 

Applets

Shared applets are also in this update, with an initial set of applets ready for your sidebars: recent comments, recent posts, topic list, category list, archive list, search function and site statistics.

Applets work very much like included templates, with two exceptions: They don't change your template context (tags and variables), and you can share them with other users.  If I set up a nice applet on mysite.mee.nu, you can use it with the code [applet mysite.mee.nu:niceapplet].  With your own applets and the standard applet set, you don't need to specify the site.

Update: 1.1b is now live.  I'll be testing it tonight, and then I'll activate the features for everyone tomorrow morning.

On Track To 1.1

Here at mee.nu we have some cool stuff coming up with version 1.1, and I think it's time to tease you about it.

Wizardry

• Folder Wizard: Folders are the key to unlocking the power of mee.nu, but there are so many types and so many settings.  The folder wizard will simplify creating categories, directories, user groups, archives, and all those other mysteries of life.
• Site Wizard: Want to add a forum to your site?  Or a second blog?  A journal, or a podcast, or a photo album?  The site wizard will handle all the fiddly stuff for you.
• Layout Wizard: One column?  Two columns?  Three?  Sidebar to the left or right?  The layout wizard will automatically adjust your CSS and templates to make your site just the way you want it.
• Style Wizard: Pick and choose the elements you want - colours and fonts and images and shapes - to put together your own unique blog style.

Ajax

mee.nu will go to at least, oh, Web 1.7 as we add standard Ajax support.  We'll be using the rather nifty mootools library plus some plugins to make your blogs faster and better and... Well, they're already as cheap as can be.

File Uploading

Uploading files one at a time can be a bit of a drag, so we have a solution for that coming too.

User Preferences

We'll be adding new template features so that you can customize your site according to user preferences and permissions, so that you can, for example, have user-selectable themes, or make a folder accessible only to your friends.

Documentation

Boring but necessary - more documentation is on the way.

Valid HTML

Another of those boring but necessary details: With the update we'll be making some changes to the templates to ensure they produce valid HTML 4.01 Transitional.  At least until you add a Youtube video, anyway...

And... A Surprise Or Two

I can't tell you what they are, but trains and ships are involved.

The Import/Export Business

Hi all!

The Import module is now live. 

Currently, it supports Blogger / Movable Type style export files; any blogging system that can export such a file will likely also work, and if you have a sample of such a file I'd be happy to test it for you.

On your edit screen, just click on the Import option under Tools.  You will see a screen looking rather like this:

Multiple Authors

Hi everyone!  Multiple author support is now in place.

To enable it, follow these 3 easy steps:

1. Click on the Friends group in your edit screen.
2. Create a new group called Authors.
3. Add your friend to the new Authors group using either their user name or blog address.  (They must sign up to mee.nu first!)

Planned Outage - July 2nd 6AM GMT

Hi all.

We'll be having a brief outage (again, this should be no more than 5 minutes) for updates to the new forum module.  We have a beta tester for this, and after we shake the bugs out a bit I'll be rolling it out to everyone.  Give it a week or so.

This update will also enable multiple authors for your blog, something that I know a few people have been waiting for.  I'll post instructions on how to enable this (don't worry, it's easy!) once the code is in place.

Oh yes - if you're looking for past notices, they're moved to the Tech folder after 24 hours.

Update: Okay, the code update is in place, and doesn't seem to have broken everything.  Now I just need to upload the new templates to give access to the new features...
