Regarding the hyperlink dialog box, the insert picture dialog box, and to a lesser extent the view edit source dialog box. My biggest complaint is that it is easier to just type the raw html code than it is to figure out how to use them.......and it's a nuisance to disable my pop-up blocker.

The little <> widget opens an HTML editing window that you can use if that helps.

If I understand the question, you need to edit the default .css file to give the #banner more height, save the file, upload it and then change your template to load the new .css
If that's wrong or I misunderstood, ignore me.
My question/suggestion about the link editor would be adding a line where we can enter the displayed text. As it is now I get something like [href="http://link.com"]http://link.com and then I have to edit the text. I would like to get [href="http://link.com"]My text from the pop-up editor.

My question/suggestion about the link editor would be adding a line where we can enter the displayed text.I can look at doing that. The easiest way to do it currently is to enter the text first, select it, and then add the link.

I'll be addressing this in two ways: First, it will disambiguate posts by adding a _2, _3, and so on to duplicate entries.
Second, you'll be able to manually edit the URL (or at least, the last part of the URL) on the post screen.
That should be in place by the weekend.

[post.clean], which is used to show comment text in the sidebar, cleans out NSFW tags so all that NSFW goodness gets posted in its full glory right on the front page of ur blog. See the example at the top of this post.

Hey, just wanted to point out that I'm writing posts[/url/ on the [url=http://youredoingitwrong.mee.nu/favicons]blog software and different cool ways on how to customize it. The link for all beta related posts is http://youredoingitwrong.mee.nu/betanonsense.
I'd like to try and foster a little neighborhood good will here. We've all got blogs that may or may not take off. One of the things that helps blogs live is activity from readers. So I've added a Locals blogroll to my front page and would like everybody (who give a shit) to do the same. The first link in my comment is the link to that article. If you check out my blog you'll see the locals on the right.
The goal is that by reading and posting on other peoples blogs, and letting our readers know about other interesting blogs at mee.nu, we can get us all some of that sweet, sweet reader lovin' that all white girls secretly crave.
In closing, I'd like to once again pimp my blog and make a covert appeal to Pixie to feature my blog prominently in as many places as possible. Did I say that out loud?

Mookie logged in to Minx and now it will not let her log out. So I cannot get to my site to edit, and any comments I make default to her name and info.
I did find the "log out" link at the bottom of my beta edit menu, and it worked great. Ted got logged right out. But Mookie didn't. There needs to be a way to log out for people with mee.nu sites who share a PC. Or maybe there is and I haven't found it.
Perhaps always leave the login boxes on the mee.nu main page, but add a message saying "hi, you are already logged in" using the 'you' tag above it if someone is already/still logged on..

1) [post.text] surrounds text in a <P> tag (notice the capitol); should be <p> and </p> at the end (hey, I'm not a HTML nazi, but some people are)
2) RSS feeds fail. Atom is working, but RSS isn't. Templates for both would be greatly appreciated
3) Could you check my comment posting template? Not sure which one it is-- the one I'm looking at right now as I write this comment. Font size has been shot up to 125%, and I'm not exactly sure why.
Thanks!

2) RSS feeds fail. Atom is working, but RSS isn't. Templates for both would be greatly appreciatedHmm. I noticed something funny there - Firefox wouldn't pick it up, even though the RSS feed validates fine. I'll take another look.

[comment.author.name] is blank when the author is either 1) the person logged in or 2) the blog owner (not sure which). I used this little feature to highlight my comments, but its broke now.
Can this be reverted to its original function, or is there another way I can identify the author of a comment as the owner of the blog? Thizzanks!

Symptom: First visited page 1, then page 2, possibly page 3. No problems noted. At page 4 (?), got bottom graphic in the wrong place as in shot 1. Hit "force reload" (which ignores cached files), page then rendered correctly, as in shot 2. Same problem with page 5.
Just now went to page 1 again, and this time it rendered as in shot 1, i.e., with the bottom screwed. Two different CSS files?

Log in, then on your "EDIT" page click "TEMPLATES", then "BLOGROLL" (in my Templates lists it's the third item in the "Include" group). That will get you to an editing screen. Blogroll entries are standard hyperlinks. Don't forget to save (button below edit box) when you're done.

But if you create a new template, with a type of "Include" and the name "Blogroll", then just put the HTML for your blogroll into it, that will work fine.
We don't have a specific blogroll maintenance screen yet, but that is on its way.

What am I doing wrong? I know what hyperlinks look like and I only see the www.biglead.com url in the template.

Have been playing with the foobar2000 music player, and admired a feature that might save you a ton of tech-support headaches: Most of foobar's information displays are user-configurable, and every one of the program's configuration boxes includes a "reset" button, which reloads the default code when clicked. That might be really handy on the template configuration screens... especially for any of us who might screw things up beyond hope of figuring it out.
Just a thought...

With some of the more advanced templates, you could potentially break the edit screens too, so you need some way of resetting to something you know works.

Being able to embed more than just youtube clips. The one site I enjoy going to is Heep: http://www.heep.co.il/heep/homeWill do.
If there are sites that people use content from or link to frequently, I can certainly put in tags like the [youtube] tag for them. For example, there's a [wikipedia] or [wp] tag: [wp=Youtube] does this: Youtube.
I know of many of the big sites, but it would be great if people would mention their personal favourites here.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 11, 2007 03:52 AM (PiXy!)
To pick up on my request for the link editor, I would also like to be able to set defaults, for example my images I always like the 3px frame border and it would be nice not to select it everytime. That's a very good idea, but I'm not sure how to do it. The editor is (as someone guessed) a 3rd-party product; I'll take a look at the documentation. (It has developer docs, but unfortunately, not really any user docs.)
Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 11, 2007 03:54 AM (PiXy!)
As for adding to the [youtube] and [wiki] tags, I think google (plus other search engines) and dictionary (plus other word look-ups) would be good, plus other video services like yahoo, liveleak, etc.
Posted by: abwtf at April 11, 2007 12:54 PM (YsCnY)
While you are poking around in there it'd also be nice to add a hot-link line in the editor to make images clickable to a website. (If you send me the dev docs I can take a look at work.)Well, after putting an image in your post, you can click on the link button to link it to somewhere. But yeah, a field for that in the popup would be nice.
As for adding to the [youtube] and [wiki] tags, I think google (plus other search engines) and dictionary (plus other word look-ups) would be good, plus other video services like yahoo, liveleak, etc.Yep. Google, Wiktionary, Yahoo and Google video, were already on the list. I hadn't heard of Liveleak when I made the original list, but they've been popping up a lot lately. I have about 40 sites on the list now; it will probably end up being something like 400 by the end of the year...

1) Make Mail: optional for posts. I'm tired of entering one fake email address after another (does anybody put in a real address???).
2) Preview your posts before submitting them. Includes comments, too.
3) The smiley template is fun. I've removed all smileys and replaced them with rude comments about the smiley user by using the template. I'd like to be able to create a template which basically does the same thing--examines comment text and replaces instances of A with B -- but not have to use the smiley template to do this. It would match the exact format of the smiley template, being "[look for] [replace with]". I'd also like the ability to use a regular expression for the text match. Be real easy to implement some language filters this way... and to treat commenters like dirt, which is always fun.
4) Make updating comments easier with a [update] tag. This tag would be replaced with the "Update" template. The template would contain, by default, "<b>Updated on [datetimewhatever]</b></br>" or something similar. That way when you need to update a post you can just slap that update tag in there and roll.
5) Gimme that tag ([post.whatever]) documentation!

I'd also like the ability to use a regular expression for the text match.I'll probably be adding this at some point, but regular expressions are a bit of an overkill for the average user.

Here's something for the "wishlist."
A link on the mee.nu home page to a full list of the mee.nu blogs. With new people signing up for the beta left and right, it's been hard to peek in on the neighbors and see what kinds of cool experiments and errors are going on with only the New Sites list.

One thing worth noting there: If you tick the Hidden box on your Manage->Site page, your site won't show up in listings. That's useful if you... don't want to show up on listings.

Okay then, how about a time-delay Publish feature where you can tell the program to put up a post at 'hh:mm:ss mm/dd/yy' so we can have new stuff show up while on vacation or we can binge write a batch of posts and have them show up at a leisurely pace.
And spell-check!

For example, I just realized that by putting the code for my site counter in between [ifn user.isowner] and [/ifn] means that when I look at my site the button doesn't show and it doesn't register as a hit so now it should only catch other people visiting.
That may be obvious to experienced bloggers or a standard tip somewhere in user guides for site counters, but for n00bs like myself it's pretty clever. I think.

Will there be an upgrade for the [magic.pager]?Yes, absolutely. I've started work on this, but the new version isn't working yet.
I'm having to make some tweaks first so that it can work out what parts of the page content are and aren't being paged. Then feed it information on how many items in the paging set there are so it can work out how many pages there are, then it can stop you going off the end, offer a drop-down box for quick page selection, etc etc.
The idea of offering a basic pager widget to start with was so that if everyone uses it (rather than using tags to create their own) then as soon as I upgrade it, everyone gets the advantage of the new one.

I'm a bit fuzzy on how this all works, in part because my CSS-fu is very weak. But it looks to me as if the "Entry" template applies equally to the main page and to the pages for individual posts.
What I want to do is to have a different format for each. In particular, I want to get rid of the sidebar for individual posts so I can use the full pagewidth (for images).
Solution 1 would be if there actually was a different template for each, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Solution 2 would be if there was some sort of flag which could be used with "if" in the "Entry" template that indicated which was being displayed, and thus to include the sidebar only for the main page.
Does such a flag exist? If so, what is its name?

When I went today to New Post and also Edit there was a considerable delay for the page to load, 10 seconds or more from what used to be instant. Any reason?
Also a request - I would like to have a Save button up at the top of the New Post editor screen instead of having to scroll all the way past the Meta and More and Tags and the rest to the bottom of the page.

Might have been network delays somewhere between you and the server. I'm not seeing any slowdown on the server side. But definitely let me know if you see this again.

See that button at the top left in each editor? Is save button!

Love the post editor.
Do you know of a resource for stylesheet templates? Wordpress gave us a bunch of easy tamplates so I haven't played with CSS.
Also, is Java Script allowed?

I don't have a dedicated screen yet for creating new categories, but take a look at the example one and copy that for your other categories and you won't go too far wrong.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 10, 2007 09:59 PM (PiXy!)
Well speaking of categories.
I've already created an "anime" category, but before I did, I wrote a couple posts that were unassigned. When I moved them into the anime folder/category, they list as part of that category (and show up as such on the main page (after a bit of fiddling with the template)), but if you filter for only posts in the anime category, they aren't listed.
I have three posts on the main page in the anime category, but if you click through to the anime category, only the post that was created after the category appears.

mAcChaos - They aren't listed by default, but I'll post some examples of that shortly.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 10, 2007 10:18 PM (PiXy!)
They don't in the default template.
First you have to create the category.
1) Go to your edit page and under "manage" click "folders".
2) A page titled "Edit Folder" will appear. In the "type" field type "Category". In the "name" field, give the category a name. Finally, in the "path" field, you'll like want to use the same name you used for name (but I'd avoid the use of anything other than number or letters)
3) Click save.
That's the bare-bones basics (as I understand it after fiddling around a bit) of creating a category. You can edit any of those properties later.
Posted by: Will at April 10, 2007 10:26 PM (SOx9v)
<h2>Categories</h2>
<ul>
[categories]
<li><a href="/[category.path]">[category.name]</a></li>
[/categories]
</ul>
The [categories] tag selects all your folders of type "Category". The name is, well, the name you gave it, and the path is the path. So that code will create a nice little list of clickable links to your category pages.
You can see it at work in my sidebar.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 10, 2007 11:12 PM (PiXy!)
That's just the tag I was looking for.
I was dreading the idea of manually editing the sidebar template everytime I added a new category.
Posted by: Will at April 10, 2007 11:22 PM (SOx9v)
There are a huge number of tags available, and I really need to sit down and document them all. If I document three or four each day, I'll be done... by the end of next year.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 10, 2007 11:25 PM (PiXy!)
I was going about displaying them in the sidebar an entirely different way. I'd already created an Includes template with a manually written list of the categories I wanted to appear, similar to how the blogroll is treated. Then I just ahem... included that in the sidebar template.
Is there going to be an option for listing a post in multiple categories? Maybe that's already possible, but I'm just not seeing it.

ABWTF: did you use the "move to" or "copy to"? My problem is that I write a post, then realize I don't have a category for it. I save and publish the post, then create the category. If I then try to move the post into the new category, Minx appears to register the move. The category link I've placed in the post footer shows up, and in the post management page, it clearly shows it being in the right category.
But,
If you click on the Category link in the post footer, only posts that have been published to that category from the beginning will appear in the filtered list. I'm going to go try the "copy to" and see what that borks.
Posted by: Will at April 11, 2007 05:46 AM (olS40)
Well, "copy to" (it's actually "add to") didn't work either. I'm really stumped on this one.
However I did find a workaround for the wonky status pulldown in the post composition page(at least until Pixy fixes it). If you go to the post list, there is a publish function in one of the lower pulldowns. I did not see that before for some odd reason.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 11, 2007 07:49 AM (PiXy!)
WILL: I don't recall how I did it but I didn't use Move or Copy. I think I simply used Edit to put the post in the category. So perhaps it was really more of a workaround to a bug you found.
QUESTION: What is the Pending category? Would it by any chance be a step up from Draft where I can see it as it would appear on the blog and so I can make changes before doing an edit?
Posted by: abwtf at April 11, 2007 07:07 PM (FJ/ua)
Is the Search feature supposed to work or not yet active?
Also for the record even if you can't do anything about it, I've found a few bugs with the Post editor, for example I saved some text for a Post header so I didn't have to recreate it each time but posting it in adds a few items and changes a few <'s into something like &#%. Also I find if I change font sizes of text the </span> doesn't always seem to go in the correct place.

Why is my blog okay in internet explorer but sucky in firefox?Well, the main reason for that sort of thing is that Internet Explorer doesn't work right, but that doesn't help you much.
Which blog is yours?
Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 12, 2007 02:01 AM (PiXy!)
The blue text is because you forgot to close the <font> tag in your banner. IE is automatically closing it; Firefox isn't. I'm not sure which behaviour is technically correct in this case...
Hope that helps a bit more than my previous comment.

Laughable newbie question:
I have a domain name at godaddy.com. I have their Domain Control Center up on my screen and want to put my mee.nu site in the Nameserver box.
My goal is for people to get from my domain name (rittenhouse.net) to the mee.nu site (rittenhouse.mee.nu).
What do I enter in the Nameserver box?
Posted by: Michael Rittenhouse at April 17, 2007 01:43 AM (y0AcQ)
The problem is, we don't fully support that yet. Probably by early May.
Right now, I think you could use Godaddy's forwarding to redirect rittenhouse.net to rittenhouse.mee.nu. I'm doing that with one of my domains, but I haven't tried setting it up with Godaddy.
Once it is fully supported, you'll be able to add an alternate site in your control panel here so that rittenhouse.net links to rittenhouse.mee.nu. Then at Godaddy, you'll set it up so that they host your DNS, and set rittenhouse.net as a CNAME for rittenhouse.mee.nu. Just don't try this right now.

Looking back now this is code they give for 'page other than current'
<script type="text/javascript">
digg_url = 'WEBSITE_URL';
</script>
<script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
So for Website_url I should have done [post.id] or or [post.path] or what? And that would automatically substitute individual post urls, or would I have to do each of these individually and manually set them up?
(btw everyone feel free to Digg my post higher!)

Using Firefox I cannot edit a post after I've saved it with the Digg code. When I try to reopen it gets caught in a loop (I gave it over a minute, perhaps eventually the text would fill in) so I have to go to IE, but there when I put in the code it does something with the code and I often get 3 or 5 Digg buttons and I have to re-edit the post 3 or 4 times to get just 1 Digg button in the center.
Some of that may be user error and learning curve of course. It's a low priority issue for me (ie, multiple categories for posts ranks much higher) but take a look at it some time or maybe ask around.
And you didn't go through with the Digg? Booooooooooooo!

Although they work with the new category, if I go to the original category the old posts still show up there as well.If you select the posts in the listing screen, you can use the Remove From option to take them out of the old category. The Move To function does what you wanted to do in the first place.
I'll be adding that functionality to the post editing screen as well, but it's slightly harder because it needs to be AJAX to work well.

I got blog comment spam!Doesn't take them long, does it?
Should I just delete it or do you want to do any sort of investigation on it to figure out how to block it?Mark it as junk for now; that way I can look at it and block the sender.
Is banning users/IPs something we can do?You'll be able to ban users (that should arrive next week), but of course that will only be effective once registration is required for commenting.
And how long before there is anything like a verification or login process for comments?I can't require logins for commenting just yet, because I'm only allowing registration by beta testers, but once we open up, that will be how it works. Say, three weeks at most.
I have two different spam filters in place, one based on the comment text and another that tries to detect a spambot by its behaviour. The second filter actually auto-bans IPs and websites, and it's pretty effective. I'll be putting in an updated version of comment-text filter this weekend to try to improve that one as well.

Two small glitches in the box displaying the tagline:
1. Descenders get cut off. That is, no tail on gees, jays, ques, commas, etc.
2.Also, there's a length limit, beyond which text simply disappears. If you try to save space by removing spaces after periods and commas, the entire string disappears. Way low on the priority list, but I'd like the editor to block typing when the limit is reached.

1. Descenders get cut off. That is, no tail on gees, jays, ques, commas, etc.Yes, this is a known problem that depends on what browser you're running, your font selection, your default font size... I'm meeting with our new graphic designer on Monday to work on issues like this. We'll be producing a new set of themes/styles for your blog, and we'll fix this in the process.
Also, there's a length limit, beyond which text simply disappears. If you try to save space by removing spaces after periods and commas, the entire string disappears.Um... That's odd, it shouldn't do that. What browser are you using?

My current tagline reads, "Descenders cut off: gjpq,(gee, jay, pee, que, comma). Plus, here's some extra text to get truncated." I didn't put in any line breaks.
Viewing with IE 7.0.5730.11, descenders appear, but the second sentence wraps to the next line and only the top line of pixels appears.
In FF, the second line does not appear at all.
And thanks for the quick response.

I created a new post with some text in the "more" section. I forgot to enter a title. The result was that my main page showed the first part of the text plus a "more ..." hyperlink pointing to "http://borders.mee.nu/#more". I've since added a title and the "more ..." hyperlink now works.

I see that there's a version of my template to have 3 columns. Question is, how do I get content to appear on the second column. I tried once and I screwed up royally.

No, really. I just spent hours (days, weeks, months) updating the look and feel of the old MT site - fixing up the CSS and the templates.
Is there no way to port any of this over? Thanks.
I'm gonna go whack my head on the desk a little until I feel better. *sigh*

I'm still inexperienced in RSS feeds, so I have a basic question.
If, as I usually do, I publish an entry then go back and make changes (hard to know what it's going to look like unless I do), will my RSS subscribers see the "draft," or will they get the version I finally settle on?

The first tip here is that mee.nu requires cookies to work. Please make sure cookies from the mee.nu domain are accepted by your browser.
Second, many of the site maintenance pages make use of Javascript, so you will need to allow Javascript at least for your own site.

Hi Pixy,
I have been away for quite a while but I see my blog is still up (thanks for keeping it warm and dry for me). My login to gain access to movable type from here was saved on my laptop which was two laptops ago. I'd like to resume blogging so if you could send me my login and password that would be appreciated. The blog is http://countermeasures.mu.nu. If it's not that simple, just email me and I'm sure we can figure something out.
Aside: What is mee.nu and how does it compare to mu.nu?
Thanks!

Drat, it ate my first comment.
I think there's something ownky with the post status pulldown. I saved a post as "draft", and when I came back, the "publish" at the top of the stauts pulldown lisy had been over written by "draft." So I tried changing to "published" to see if that would do anything. All it did was replace the first item in the lest with "published" and the post still doesn't appear.

Stupid newbie question: What controls the "more" tag. When I wrote this three-sentence post, I'm sure I didn't go anywhere near the "more" window, yet there it is. (Yet in the previous post it's not there.
Also reporting that the WYSIWYG post editor seems to work fine in both K-Meleon 0.9 on Windows 98 and K-Meleon 1.02 on Windows XP.

What's Windows 98?
Dunno if there is a paragraph tag or not, but you didn't have a closing tag, so it wouldn't have worked no matter what.
You might have screwed up your post template, which caused the conditional to fail...

AIUI, there is still a ton of legacy FoxPro stuff out there... not so much Clipper anymore. I've been looking at what it'd take to replicate things with newer stuff, but first impression is that the limitations of real SQL are a pain.
Yeah, I know it's fragile. Needless to say, everything is imaged and we keep two offsite backups, one in a different time zone. Anything happen bad enough to knock 'em all out, we'll probably be OB anyway.
Posted by: Old Grouch at April 13, 2007 04:56 AM (+E8+c)
Limitations of real sql? Dude, you're living in a sandbox, commenting on the limitations of the playground. Foxpro is a shitty version of Access. Access is a shitty version of an application + Sql Server. I may be wrong, but I believe MS developed Access in response to Foxpro, and that MS eventually bought Foxpro in order to get its client base. Let's see: foxpro or maybe fox_pro (wikipedia links).
Anyhow, all Fox and Access are is a VBA (visual basic for applications) development environment/execution engine pasted on the front of a database engine. Anything you can build in Fox/Access you can build an equivalent system with VB6 with a Sql database. And that technology's ancient.

There were an amazing number of applications being written in XBase back then. When I was doing radio (c.a. 1985) I used a Clipper-compiled music scheduling program that ran on whatever Dell was current (amber screen!). It was pretty sophisticated: You tagged each song with characteristics (some were scaled, like "intensity", others were just flags like "male vocal." Then you gave it some rules and the program would block out the hours for you.
Of course that was long before CDDB, so we had to enter all the data ourselves.

All the browsers I know of do a poor job at resizing images; they all use simple nearest-neighbour algorithms for the processing. The resize function in Minx uses soft anti-aliasing, which produces much better results but takes much more CPU time.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at May 06, 2007 04:42 PM (PiXy!)
"...which produces much better results but takes much more CPU time."But only has to be done ONCE, so think of all the energy we're saving!
Gee, I'm feeling green already LOL!
Posted by: Old Grouch at May 07, 2007 12:01 AM (qbFAY)
But that's probably why browsers don't do it - on an older PC, the extra time taken to render a page with a large number of resized images could be quite noticeable.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at May 07, 2007 02:31 AM (PiXy!)
This screwed the formatting in this comment, and I've now posted a clean example here.
When I check the page source, I see that BBCode is outputting <small> when it sees {/small}. This means font size reduction doesn't clear. (Works correctly if you use {sm}{/sm} tags.)
On my browser (at this moment) the unclosed <small> tag makes it render everything after the broken comment on the help page in small font-- even when the comments are hidden, and including the sidebar. I posted the comment almost a week ago, and since there hasn't been any subsequent screaming I'm assuming that I'm the only one seeing this. I'll have a screenshot added to the test post shortly.

I selected "Page" from the dropdown (instead of post) and it seems to have not generated a post, or generated it is such a way that I don't know how to get to it.
Also, what do the dates in that area control? Are they able to be changed (like the path field), or are they auto-populated and useless to try to change? I tried changing the "Start Date" and "End Date" fields assuming they controlled the life of the post, but when I reloaded the post they were reset to previous values.
Posted by: Mob at June 15, 2007 03:35 PM (f+cPk)
Pages are what you use when you want to create an entry that doesn't appear in the main flow of your blog, like an "about" page.
The start and end dates don't work just yet, sorry about that. I should take them out until they do work.

Is there a way to access the pages you've created? They aren't listed in the posts list, and I can't seem find them anywhere else. I assume once I can get to them I can link them as I would any other page on the internet.Um. Oops. I'll fix that.
The system seems to be intended for folks that have a bit of experience with creating blogs, so I apologize for the novice questions.Novice questions are great, because there are a lot more novices around than experts, and the questions tell me where I need to do more work on the user interface and documentation.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at June 15, 2007 03:59 PM (PiXy!)
Duplicate post names: If you create multiple posts with the same name, the time/date link in the "Posted by:" message (and external links to the post) will only ever take you to the newest of the posts that share the same name. I noticed that the "path" field can be used to circumvent this, however, this is less than obvious, especially to novices.
Perhaps an addition of a numeral to the end of the path for duplicates (the check for duplicates may be processor intensive, especially on large blogs) or an addition of the timecode to the second placed after the name of the post as default path. (newpost_061507122223) This would allow for unique post names, but not lose the easy sight recognition by post name.

Still having problems with the post date change option.
What I did:
Had a post that I started on 7/7, but wasn't able to finish, so saved as "Draft." Wrote and published several later posts.
Came back to the draft today, and finished it. Saved text changes as draft, then reopened, changed menu to "publish", clicked options, changed date to today's date and current GMT by editing the existing entry. Clicked elsewhere to get cursor out of the time/date box. Clicked "Save".
Result: post was published, but with the original date, and in the original order, that is below all the subsequent posts. My error?

I will have the [posts] / [post.tag] documentation up today (my today, which might be your tomorrow), and with any luck also the [comments] / [comment.tag] info. The only caveat there is that there are lots of fields that you can't get to right now, because the editor screens are lagging behind what the template engine supports. So you will see some cool features that you won't be able to use. ops:

go to this post and scroll down to the sample link at the bottom. It's a 27-second MP3, filesize reported at 369kb by Windows.
I've uploaded it twice, and the file directory shows the right size. When I go to download/play it the download progress bar shows the right size, but it gets to about 239k and then jumps to 100%. Windows reports the downloaded file at 240k, and indeed the end is cut off.
FWIW, it was encoded with LAME.

In the past I've created a blog using Movable Type (see http://dustingmybrain.com) and more recently another using Blogspot, which I despise. Regardless, I want to duplicate what I did at Blogspot (see http://thefeatheredones.blogspot.com) for my blog here at mee.nu. Though I noted that an import feature from other blogs will be available in the future, rather than wait for that feature, I want to go ahead and fiddle on my own. If at all possible, I'd like to see a layout page with the CSS info labeled for each area. I ask this because I find the CSS templates (MT, Blogspot, etc.) are coded with different names; i.e., some label the post body as 'post' or 'content' or 'blog body' etc.
Having gone through everything here, I am rendered completely and utterly confused and hope I've explained clearly what I'm looking for. Does such a page exist here? Thanks in advance for any assistance/help/guidance!

Right now I have 11. I added the most recent about 10 days ago, but didn't notice until today that only the first 10 appear in the category list. Checked the folder list: They're all still there, and they're all marked "public," except "Example," which I marked "private" but still appears(!). The one that doesn't show up is the 11th in the folder list: "The Press." It isn't a two-word category name problem, because other categories "Dear Diary" and "In Passing" are still visible. It also doesn't seem to be related to whether posts in a particular category are visible on the first page.
I believe that I'm still using the default category code in the sidebar template. Here 'tis:
<h2>Categories</h2>
<ul>
[categories]
<li><a href="&047;&091#;category.path&093;">#091;category.name&093;</a></li>
&091;&047;categories&091;

I'm tinkering with a template and trying to get it set up so only the first post displays the actual text.
Then the next 4 posts will display the excerpt and the last 6 will display the blurb.
I'd started out with a conditional:
[if.eq post.number 1] which I thought would display handle setting up things for the first post. But as we all know I'm a knucklehead and am doing something wrong, 'cause the [if.eq post.number 1] section is being displayed, instead of evaluated.

Question about creating new categories. Successfully (I think!) created an "administrivia" category using the "edit folder" screen.
Entries were:Type => CategoryName => AdministriviaPath => http://oldgrouch.mee.nu/http//oldgrouch.mee.nu/adminstrivia (copied from "Example," changed the last folderURL Pattern => left blank, since there wasn't anything in the example. What is this?Linked to => okay, I see it's automagically linked me to "Category.Administrivia"What are Tagline and Description? (As you can see, I've never done this before.)
Suggestion: You've got enough room on the page to include some one-sentence explanations of what's supposed to go in the form.
Observation: I'm running 800x600 on this machine (the other one is 1024x76 , and the Type, Name, Path, and URL Pattern textboxes extend off past the right edge of the screen. There's also no horizontal scrollbar. Want a screenshot?
Posted by: Old Grouch at April 10, 2007 10:43 PM (8vPcQ)
Also, I see it turned the characters "number 8" followed by "right parenthesis" in the next-to-last sentence into a smiley.
Posted by: Old Grouch at April 10, 2007 10:49 PM (8vPcQ)
I don't think you need to put in the "http...etc." for the path. I think if you just put "adminstrivia" in the path, it will automagically create the path http://oldgrounch/mee.nu/adminstrivia.
At least that's how I created my first category.

Yes, that's exactly right.
Old Grouch, I'll be doing some testing at 800x600; we should be able to support that... though you might need to scroll a bit now and then, it should at least work.
Also, I see it turned the characters "number 8" followed by "right parenthesis" in the next-to-last sentence into a smiley.Yes, it will do that. That's something you can control for your blog; take a look at smilies.mee.nu for more information.
Also, I have some bbcode documentation available. Ordered and unordered lists are supported, but the code is a little different to the HTML version; for an unordered list you want something like:
[bullet][item]Item one[/item][item]Item two[/item][/bullet]

First problem: The "Link To" selector is stuck on "Directory.images (/images)". There is a "Directory.icons (/icons)" choice in the selector, but although I can change to it, the change won't save.
One of my categories is named "Beta" (upper case "B"). I loaded a *.gif named "folder_beta.gif" into the icons folder, then uncommented the code in the Post template. Couldn't get the image to show, so I hard-coded the URL. Page source shows the right address, but the image still won't load.
Secondary question: Are filenames case-sensitive? [post.category]="Beta"; name change routine on file's page won't let me change "folder_beta.gif" to "folder_Beta.gif".

File names are case-sensitive, but they're forced to lower-case on the server. I've added a fix for that to tomorrow's update (April 15th).

Thanks! That did it, it came back automatically linked correctly. I'll futz around with the filename problem after Sunday's update. Finishing taxe$ today.

First, the update fixed the capitalization problem. I still wasn't able to rename the old one, but I was able to upload a new copy of the icon named "folder_Beta.gif" and have the uppercase "B" stick. So my "Beta" icons are now visible. Hurrah!
New problem: I have two categories that are multi-word: "Dear Diary" and "In Passing". But if I try to upload a file with a blank in the name, the blank gets stripped out. So: "folder_Dear Diary.gif" becomes "folder_DearDiary.gif". But this won't match [post.category], which will be "Dear Diary". Any suggestions?

You can't have filenames with spaces, and that probably won't get changed. What I can do pretty easily is give you a [post.category.nospace] tag, which is just the category name with the spaces stripped out.

Tried renaming "folder_DearDiary.gif" to "folder_deardiary.gif", didn't take.
Then changed template code from "img src="/icons/folder_[post.category].gif" to "img src="/icons/folder_[post.category.nospace].gif". Category icons disappeared, and when I ask the browser to copy the icon url I get "http://oldgrouch.mee.nu/icons/folder_%5Bpost.category.nospace%5D.gif" (except with the brackets not escaped).
Sorry!

I've got a new issue. I'm trying out a Perl package that will upload a google map track of my running log. (http://dave.runningland.com/grunninglogs/)
But the script needs to ftp the data to the server, and I can't get it to work. My username and password are getting refused by the server. It's not just the script; trying to manually ftp to boviate.mee.nu won't let me log in either.
Of course, it may just be that you don't want any stinkin' ftp access to the server, which is probably a reasonable security decision. I tried searching the help, and didn't find anything about ftp one way or another. So what I'm asking is, am I screwing up the ftp access somewhere such that I need to fiddle with it, or should I come to grips with ftp being not allowed and look for a different toy to play with?

I've got categories.
I've applied the said categories to posts.
I have no categories in the sidebar or on the posts.
What am I doing wrong?
(sorry....computer neophyte alert)

Rocket Jones has two category hotwo posts up:
Part 1
Part 2
The second part covers how to get categories in the sidebar (requires a template change in the SIDEBAR template).
If you want category icons, you have to uncomment some code in the POST template (it's marked), and create a directory (and some icons). I can't find the howto right now, but this post and some of the ones following outline the procedure. (Ignore most of the problems... they've been fixed.) Any more questions?

Open the EDIT->TEMPLATES->ITEM: POST template. Scroll down to find the line
Posted by: [post.authorlink] in
Add this code after that line (leave a space after the word "in ":
[post.category]
There should also be a space between the closing "span" tag and the word "at", which should already be there. To see how this looks and works, check my blog.Posted by: Old Grouch at May 13, 2007 10:50 PM (8m7sz)

Hey, I've been having problems with the new Ace of Spades site. I use Firefox, and it was continually crashing the browser, both release 3 and release 2. It seemed better under IE, and I'm now running Firefox 3 using IE Tab for Ace's site and it seems stable, but I keep seeing encoding problems. Right now the articles like "Columbia Professor in “Noose” Case ..." show up with little square blocks in place of double quotes. I've tried different encoding options to no avail. The same article on the old site doesn't have these problems.

Note: Our current WYSIWYG editor doesn't work properly in Opera, and doesn't work at all in Safari. We're looking at alternatives, and we're open to suggestions. We will also be adding support for alternate editors, so if you have a favourite, here's the place to add your vote.

*attempt 2*
I haven't had a chance to try again (at work, gonna get fired ;-) ), but when I tried to use the WYSIWYG editor in the "More:" section to try one if the ol' "image below the jump" tricks, it just sat there like a lump. When that didn't work, I used the image insertion tool in the "Text:" section. It worked, but it pasted the image in the "More:" section. I don't think it was anything retarded on my part, but you never know.

It was, in fact, saving your comments. It was even saving them somewhere vaguely sensible. Just not anywhere you can actually see them again.
The trick was, it only happened when you were posting a comment inside a category page or a subforum or something like that. The reason why this happened is a little complicated, but once I realised what was going on it was very easy to fix.
Now!
As for your editor problem - I'll take a look at that. I have seen the More editor behave a little oddly like that, but not for a while. I've certainly posted images to it.
I have an updated version of the editor with some bug fixes; possibly that will help.

Is there some simple way to us the insert image tool to display images that are uploaded/saved into our images folder without having to remember the path/filname or first copy the shortcut to the clipboard? I know you've been mentioning drag-and-drop capability over the last couple weeks. Is that a function of the editor?

If you open the file manager in a new window (I'm working on making a nice compact version of it to use just that way) you can drag and drop images right into the editor. It actually copies the sizing and attributes like borders as well, so view the full size image when you do this.

How do you we go about adding websites to the blogroll? I cant seem to access that feature. There's no special blogroll editor yet; you just put the links into the Blogroll template. Once I have a proper blogroll system, you'll be able to import those links, so nothing will be wasted.

My most recent post includes a part number that contains imbedded spaces but shouldn't be split over two lines. I opened the <> html screen and inserted the &-n-b-s-p-; (fuzzed so it doesn't get eaten) strings in the right spots, clicked "apply" then "ok", then "save" on the main screen. But the number still gets broken and the nonbreaks are regular spaces when I look at the page source.
Tried it again and the same thing happened. Don't BELIEVE I made the same error twice, but you never know...

Since post editor update, I can't get into the "more" section. Clicking the "More" link draws the editing window on the page, but I can't get the cursor there. (Clicking in the edit area does nothing.) I have java disabled (machine I'm on now doesn't even have a JVM), if that's relevant.
Posted by: Old Grouch at April 28, 2007 08:25 PM (GLhvz)
Does the editor change non-breaking spaces into just plain spaces or did I screw up on saving twice?Hmm. I didn't think it did, but I haven't tested it myself.
Since post editor update, I can't get into the "more" section.A number of people are having this problem, so I'll change the default setting to make it easier.

This one is probably a "working as designed" item, but it's interesting: If the post title is a "String within Quotations" (like this) it will accept the title for publication *but* if you try to subsequently edit the post, the title will disappear and have to be re-entered.

The edit page uses your custom CSS if you have such, so if you change it to make your page wider, it will take effect there as well.

I've gotten almost everything working! Mee.Nuvia is great!
A few questions...
How do I get the "tagline" or description to show in the various categories?
How does one insert the "forum" feature into the template?
Is there anyway to have the forum sort topics by category?
What does "url pattern" do in the files/ folders? Part of my problem was staring at that field wondering what to put in it....it works fine empty. What hidden wonders does it conceal?
"private, system, hidden, cache" what are these bright shiney candy-like buttons that tempt me so?
(Sorry about being a total weeaboo. )

Here goes:
How do I get the "tagline" or description to show in the various categories?[category.tagline] and [category.desc] are what you want.
How does one insert the "forum" feature into the template? That's a little tricky; I'll be upgrading the forum system this week and I'll post more info then.
Is there anyway to have the forum sort topics by category? Not sort by category, but you can break it into sub-formums by category.
What does "url pattern" do in the files/ folders?Um. Right now - nothing! Sorry about that.
"private, system, hidden, cache" what are these bright shiney candy-like buttons that tempt me so?The important ones are private and cache. Setting a folder as private means that only you can access it. setting the cache flag allows the system to cache pages, which makes it faster for busy sites. You only want to turn caching off in special cases, such as dynamically-generated CSS, where you need to change things depending on (say) what web browser is being used.

If you create a string of links that are individual words (looks like: link1 link2 link3) AND you open the source editor for some reason, it automagically removes the spaces between the links (looks like link1link2link3). Workaround: Add a printable character to the space between the links, then remove it just before posting.
The character-which-is-SHIFT+7 does wonky things when used in the title attribute of a link. (Example: "AT&T"). Escaping the character in the source editor doesn't work, the escape gets replaced with the plain character when you "apply".
